Ottawa Newborn Photographer: Tips for Lasting In-home Memories

As an Ottawa newborn photographer, I specialized in preserving families’ early days with their bundle of joy. From the comfort of home, newborn photos can be effortless, love filled and memorable for two reasons:

  1. The immediate comfort home provides families during a time of transition. Home is a space that is well known & very much loved
  2. The convenience of an experienced Ottawa newborn photographer & their team coming directly to you

Whether you are an expectant mother or considering hiring an experienced photographer based in Ottawa, I have tips to help you prepare for an in-home newborn session. Tips that I followed for my own newborn session, longing for lasting memories of the fleeting newborn days.

Tips for lasting in-home memories during your Ottawa newborn session

  • Start by selecting the room(s) you would like to use for your session. The nursery, and a primary bedroom are often times most desired by my families. I ask for photos/videos of the home, specifically the rooms that will be used for the newborn session. This quick glimpse provides me with the opportunity to make recommendations as to which rooms will photograph beautifully. Remember, I am a natural light photographer. Providing photos/a video will help to ensure I have an accurate idea of where & how light reflects into the home for Ottawa newborn photographers.
  • Before I arrive, I ask for all blinds to be open and all lights turned off. Why? To prevent light casting and various shadows. This will allow all the gorgeous, natural light to shine through the windows and into the home.
  • Do not feel the need to clean the entire home. Families with a newborn have enough on their plates while adjusting to life with their growing family. Instead, I recommend to tidy up the rooms that we will use for the session. This approach will help you avoid the stress of last-minute cleaning when you’re already short on time. If you forgot or overlook something, do not worry! I politely ask to move or pivot small furniture or items as I see fit during the session.
  • Newborns are most comfortable in warm rooms because it reminds them of the womb. Before my arrival, set the temperature of the home around 24°C (75°F) to ensure baby is comfortable throughout the session, and especially for feeds, diaper changes, and swaddling.

As an Ottawa newborn photographer, I intentionally take the time to plan for my families’ in-home newborn sessions. I truly believe it can make all the difference in capturing those precious early moments with their little one, and I understand the unique beauty of photographing families in their own space – abound by love and comfort. Therefore, by thoughtfully selecting the right rooms, maximizing natural light, and creating a warm environment, you can create a relaxed atmosphere that allows for genuine moments to unfold.

Remember, the goal is to celebrate the new addition to a beautiful family without stress. Embrace the beautiful chaos of new parenthood, and focus on the love that fills the home. By following these tips, you’ll be ready for the photoshoot and create lasting memories that your talented Ottawa newborn photographer will capture for you to cherish for years to come.

Whether you’re a new parent or a fellow ottawa photographer of newborns, I hope this insight helps you navigate the beautiful journey of capturing the fleeting days of newborn life.
